At a Canadian law school, Dean Aaron Olshev and Professor Kris L’Heureux had an unexpectedly tense and confusing meeting in the dean’s boardroom, which the dean had initiated after receiving a complaint from a prominent law firm’s recruiter. According to the dean, the recruiter had alleged that L’Heureux had made disparaging remarks about the future of legal employment and the value of the firm’s recruiting activities, but the dean had brought no documentation or evidence to the meeting. During the meeting, L’Heureux firmly denied the allegations, emphasized the lack of process, and expressed concern about the accusation, which the dean appeared to be treating as fact without any sort of evidence or verification. The conversation escalated, ending abruptly after fewer than 10 minutes. Both participants left the meeting feeling unsettled, but for different reasons.

The dean emailed L’Heureux the next day to report that the recruiter had admitted to misidentifying the professor involved, who was not L’Heureux. While the firm had apologized to the dean, the dean made no apology to L’Heureux, who felt that the dean’s tone was cursory and detached. L’Heureux was left with unresolved questions about trust, accountability, and the relationship with leadership. After the receipt of this email, a fundamental decision remained: what should L’Heureux do now?
