In April 2025, Linda Hasenfratz, executive chair of Linamar Corporation, needed to evaluate the strategic response scenarios available to the company in light of new tariffs imposed by the Trump administration and the resultant disruptions in the company’s North American business.

Linamar had grown from a one-person machine shop in 1966 to a global company with 75 manufacturing locations worldwide, employing more than 33,000 people. The company’s growth was a testament to Linamar’s culture, its flexible business model with distributed plants and suppliers located in many important markets around the world, a purposeful capital allocation strategy that balanced organic growth with inorganic acquisitions, and a deliberate financial strategy communicated to capital markets. But the interconnectedness of the auto parts industry in North America, which once provided security to auto parts manufacturers like Linamar, now exposed them to trade vagaries that included and went beyond the Canada–United States–Mexico trade agreement (CUSMA). How should Linamar manage its exposure to these new trade developments?
