Chris Higgins wanted to know if the presence of fans had any effect on the outcome of a game. The Canadian teams in the National Hockey League (NHL) played games without fans during the COVID pandemic, giving Higgins information that could help him address his question. He gathered three years’ worth of data—from before the pandemic, during the pandemic, and after the pandemic—involving just those Canadian teams. Using crosstabs and independent samples t-tests, Higgins set out to answer his question: Do fans affect the outcome of a game?
