On March 31, 2020, at the onset of the COVID-19 global pandemic, one of Canada’s most visible Indigenous spokespersons on “economic reconciliation,” JP Gladu, faced an unexpected inflection point in his leadership trajectory. In following Gladu’s journey, this two-part case reveals how discontinuous transitions can motivate leaders to redefine their purpose and strengthen specific dimensions of their character. It also guides learners through an important chapter of Indigenous history in Canada by foregrounding the emergence of the institutional infrastructure to respond to Call to Action #92 of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission regarding the roles and responsibilities of business in applying the principles, norms, and standards of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples to corporate policy and core operational activities involving Indigenous Peoples and their lands and resources.
