In January 2023, after 10 years of digitalization efforts, Jiangsu Guomao Reducer Co. Ltd. (Guomao) initiated a multi-product, small-batch production mode to meet its customers’ demand for customized reducers. Located in Changzhou City, China, Guomao specialized in developing, manufacturing, and selling reducers—power transmission mechanisms used widely in construction machinery, intelligent logistics, and other general mechanical industry fields. In 2011, Guomao had begun to digitalize its non-core and core activities, and by 2022, after overcoming resistance to the digital transformation, Guomao achieved full integration of digital technologies and business operations. Now, as the market continued to change, Guomao and its chief information officer (CIO) encountered difficulties sharing data with suppliers and struggled to balance the depth of product customization with customer satisfaction. To overcome these barriers on both the supply side and the demand side, the CIO was considering viable solutions.
