Launched by Anong Migwans Beam, a celebrated contemporary artist and serial entrepreneur, in 2017, Beam Paint and Colour (Beam Paints) manufactured and distributed vivid, non-toxic, plastic-free, and lightfast watercolour paints from several growing studios located within M’Chigeeng First Nation on Manitoulin Island, Ontario. In October 2018, a post on Instagram went viral, helping to solidify Beam Paints as a viable venture that employed several people in the community. Soon after, the business began to outgrow its initial facilities. As demand for Beam Paints’ signature watercolours grew, Beam continued to experiment with other non-plastic versions of pigmented products such as nail polish and interior paints. Each of these products had potential and needed space and time to flourish, suggesting that the road ahead for Beam Paints held several possible turns. In 2023, when the company again outgrew its facilities, Beam had to decide whether to invest more time and money in developing these new lines, focus on scaling her existing products, or hire a manager to stay the course so that she could return her focus to her art practice. She had found some success—now what?
