In early March 2026, the United States Department of Defense designated Anthropic, a leading AI safety laboratory and public benefit corporation, as a “supply chain risk,” forbidding Pentagon contractors from using its Claude models after the AI company refused to remove safeguards against mass surveillance and autonomous weapons use. Within hours, competitor OpenAI struck a deal with the Pentagon on the government’s terms. With Anthropic facing litigation, competitive, and reputational consequences, the company’s CEO had to decide how to respond: pursue legal action, engage diplomatically with government stakeholders, mobilize support from investors and industry partners, or pivot toward commercial and international markets.
