In 1988, during what has been called “the mother of all election debates,” former Canadian prime minister John Turner warned former Canadian prime minister Brian Mulroney about the dangers associated with forging closer economic ties to the United States. Following the original Free Trade Agreement between Canada and the United States in 1989, Canadian industry and companies – and their boards of directors – have become integrated with the United States. Up to 85 per cent of Canadian exports are tariff-free under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). But in 2025, Canada’s relationship with its largest trading partner soured under the protectionist policies of U.S. President Donald Trump, who threatens to hollow out our national economy. As President Trump sees it, America “holds all the cards.” That may or may not be true. But either way, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has stated our former trading relationship with the United States is “over.” Under his leadership, Ottawa has been actively seeking new or strengthened trade relationships with dozens of countries. This article argues boards of directors should be following Ottawa’s lead. Instead of governing in denial, they should be overseeing the diversification of trading relationships, while following a 12-step plan for preparing to face five worst-case scenario
