LG Energy Solution (LGES) faced complex human resource management (HRM) challenges after US immigration authorities raided its construction site for a battery factory in Georgia, United States. LGES had been actively encouraged by state and federal authorities to build local facilities in Georgia as part of a new automotive cluster around a recently opened Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) assembly facility. Yet, the increased vigilance of immigration authorities after the ascension of Donald Trump to the US presidency led to a raid that disrupted the construction site. LGES was in the process of implementing an ambitious entry strategy to the US market with local production for the local market. During the construction, equipment installation, and workforce onboarding phases, the development of LGES’s new factory heavily depended on knowledge transfer and monitoring through a globally mobile workforce. However, the existing visa regime was not conducive to such talent mobility. Thus, LGES had to assess how to continue building its facilities in the United States while its employment practices were closely monitored by immigration authorities.
