On August 22, 2024, a transaction advisory consultant completed three years of fixed-term employment with Adair and Boyd Consultants in London, UK. The next successive renewal of her contract would have entitled her to permanent employee status, but her reporting supervisor postponed the contract renewal review meeting until the term’s last moment. During the meeting, the manager rebuked the employee for taking monthly leaves of absence and informed her that he needed some time to re-evaluate her contract, which would effectively end her successive terms of employment. The transaction advisory consultant was a migrant woman who suffered from painful menstruation (referred to as dysmenorrhoea) and asked for one day off work each month to manage the pain, but her manager publicly ridiculed her personal and private health condition. After the meeting, the employee wondered how to proceed. She knew that she could pursue legal action against the company, but doing so would not restore the continuity of employment she needed to achieve permanent status. What other options did she have?
