VTR Marketing Private Limited (VTR) manufactured a premium national polyvinyl chloride and wood plastic composite (PVC/WPC) brand, VTR Boards, in Kharagpur, West Bengal, India. Despite significant investments in quality manufacturing and distribution over the past five years, VTR’s founder and director found that the business was not generating sufficient profit. In January 2024, after recommendations from a market research team, he was considering acquiring the private-label brand Enduraplast, which he hoped would generate immediate revenue for the company due to its lower price point. The introduction of a private label alongside a national brand raised questions about the distribution channel strategy. One option was to route Enduraplast through VTR’s existing network of VTR Boards distributors in the same market, leveraging the trust of current channel partners. Alternatively, VTR could introduce a carrying-and-forwarding (C&F) agent model in select markets, which would reinforce customer and builder confidence through a more prominent company presence, enabling it to implement its own market policies without intervention from distributors or retailers. However, this option would require additional capital investment. The director had to make a decision that would balance financial expenditures and channel partner relationships, with the overarching goal of transforming VTR Boards into a profitable national brand within the next three years.
