Founded in 2008, Vipshop Holdings Limited (Vipshop) was a pioneering Chinese e-commerce company best known for its flash sale–based merchandise model and discount retailing of branded goods. With a stronghold in women’s fashion and lifestyle categories, Vipshop differentiated itself from general platforms such as Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and JD.com Inc. through a self-operated, vertically integrated supply chain. By 2023, however, the company faced stagnating online user growth, rising return rates, and intensifying competition from livestreaming and social commerce platforms. In response, chief executive officer Eric Ya Shen pursued a multifaceted transformation by expanding into offline outlet malls, investing in exclusive co-branded products, and upgrading its digital infrastructure with artificial intelligence and big data. As online growth slowed and offline investments mounted, Shen now had to evaluate how best to balance physical retail expansion with continued digital innovation to sustain Vipshop’s profitability and brand differentiation.
