In September 2025, the managing director of White House Industries Private Limited (WH), a manufacturer of aluminum cans in India, faced a dilemma regarding WH’s largest export customer and distributor in South Africa, Imprint Processing Pty. Limited (Imprint). Imprint had been placed under business-rescue proceedings in August, and the appointed business-rescue practitioner (BRP) had informed WH that Imprint’s bank accounts were now frozen and it would be unable to pay for consignments that had already been shipped. However, the BRP requested that these four consignments, worth $0.16 million, be released for Imprint to utilize, with a promise that it would pay for them as soon as possible. Complying with this request would increase WH’s total financial exposure to $0.27 million. While there had been numerous rounds of negotiations with Imprint, by September 10, WH had received no conclusive assurance about payment from the BRP. The managing director was aware that no legal action could be taken against the company, nor could any guarantee be enforced, during the business-rescue proceedings, except with the written permission of the BRP. He had to decide within the next few days whether to hand over the documents for these four consignments to Imprint, in the hope of normalizing the business relationship, or to recall these consignments and cut WH’s losses. The decision would affect WH’s sales to South Africa, its profitability, and its business growth and would have a significant bearing on the sentiment of investors, from whom WH had borrowed significantly to fuel its expansion plans.
