The Met Gala, held annually on the first Monday in May at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (“the Met”) in New York, had evolved into a global fashion spectacle and cultural phenomenon. It was the primary source of funding for the Met’s Costume Institute, having raised over US$223.5 million since 1995. It also served as a powerful marketing tool for luxury brands, which often sponsored tables and dressed celebrities in custom designs on the gala’s red carpet. Each event required a year of meticulous design, planning, and orchestration, and involved 100 staff members led by Met Gala chair and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour as well as diverse stakeholders including fashion designers, museum curators, celebrity co-chairs, and more. But in 2025, as public discourse around wealth inequality, privilege, and representation became increasingly prevalent, questions arose about whether the gala should be more inclusive. Could the Met Gala embrace social change without losing its signature reputation for prestige and exclusivity? And, if changes were made, how would they impact planning for the next Met Gala?
