In August 2025, India was facing an unprecedented trade policy crisis when the United States imposed a 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports across the pharmaceuticals, textiles, and electronics sectors. India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal defiantly declared that India will not “bend the knee,” marking a critical inflection point in bilateral relations and global economic diplomacy. With India supplying 47 per cent of US generic drug prescriptions and bilateral trade valued at US$86.5 billion annually, the stakes extended far beyond the immediate economic impact. India was determined to follow the most effective strategic approach to manage the trade conflict. Specifically, the country outlined three potential strategic pathways for its response: defensive self-reliance, selective regional integration, and strategic global integration. Which path would best serve the interests of all stakeholders in India’s economy?
