Future Black Female (FBF) was a St. Catharines, Ontario–based charity founded in 2019 by Dr. Tapo Chimbganda to empower Black girls aged 16 to 22 years. In five years, FBF had built programs and created an impact in the community, despite the challenges of limited resources, stereotypes, and competition for grants with other social service organizations. It secured registered charity status in 2024, yet its revenue remained heavily dependent on grants and vulnerable to external shifts in the funding landscape. As the founding executive director, Chimbganda’s dilemma was how to ensure long-term financial sustainability for the organization, while complying with Canadian regulations for operating as a registered charity and staying true to FBF’s mission, vision, and values.
