The chief executive officer of Society for Tribes Rural Women & Employment was facing a dilemma after the resignation of a key employee in an executive position. The social development organization was dedicated to the upliftment of rural artisans in the Bastar district of Chhattisgarh, a state in eastern India. Before his resignation, the key employee had been managing a government-funded cluster development project. He was hired one year earlier with a monthly salary of ?20,000. However, auditors later pointed out that this amount exceeded the government’s stipulated limit of ?15,000 per month. As a result, his pay was reduced to the standard salary amount of ?15,000. After three months of working at the new salary, the employee resigned and submitted a legal challenge to the organization demanding that he be reimbursed the difference in pay for the previous three months. Pursuing the matter in court would be more costly than the amount the employee was demanding, in addition to the time-intensive proceedings. On the other hand, agreeing to the employee’s demands could set an unfavourable precedent among other employees. The chief executive officer had to make a difficult decision.
