In October 2024, the chief operating officer (COO) of Nordique Hospitality (Nordique), a hotel chain in Quebec, Canada, was facing an issue with one of his hotel general managers (GMs). The GM had recently requested a transfer to another Nordique hotel, citing mental fatigue as a reason. However, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Nordique was not in favour of the transfer, and the COO himself had not handled the request well. The GM had since become stagnant in his role, and concerns about his behaviour had begun to spread among Nordique’s staff. Thus, the COO urgently needed to determine (1) whether the CEO would allow the transfer, (2) whether the GM could transfer without being penalized, and (3) where the GM would move, as well as who would replace him. While sound decision-making could preserve Nordique’s performance, the wrong move could reflect poorly on the COO’s management style.
