In October 2025, the newly elected president of Hotel Association Uttarkashi in the beautiful yet fragile landscape of Uttarkashi, India was grappling with the region’s economic and environmental challenges. Uttarkashi’s tourism-driven economy was highly dependent on a narrow six-month window (May to November) aligned with pilgrimage to sacred sites. The surge in tourists during this peak period tended to drive short-term profits, but it also overburdened local infrastructure, degraded the ecology, and left workers unemployed during the harsh off-season. Discussions on the various dilemmas the association was facing revolved around one major issue. Should the association build up its economic resilience by investing in expanding year-round tourism offerings (e.g., adventure, wellness, ecological, rural tourism) or just continue optimizing six-month seasonal pilgrimage tourism for higher, but short-lived, returns? The association’s president had to weigh all options to ensure a thriving economy for his members, inclusive growth for the association, preserved ecological integrity, and a safeguard for the spiritual identity of the region.
