In June 2024, Shweta Verma, the founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of Ginny’s Planet Pvt. Ltd. (Ginny’s Planet), faced a pivotal decision: Should she continue with her company’s subtle but too cautious messaging or launch a bold new campaign to reach more people? Ginny’s Planet was a Delhi-based social enterprise whose signature product, the Ginny doll, was designed with physical differences to foster empathy and normalize disability. The company held workshops and summer camps, using storytelling, doll-making, and other activities to challenge biases and encourage inclusive attitudes among both children and adults. But the CEO still worried about the deeply entrenched stigma surrounding disability, especially in India. As she contemplated her next steps, she faced two key decisions: Should Ginny’s Planet continue to emphasize quiet persuasion and gradual cultural change? Or should the company boldly challenge societal norms? And with the festive season approaching, should she promote the Ginny doll during a time that celebrated perfection and prosperity?
