Since its founding in 1996, the Research Center for Alpine Ecosystems (CREA Mont-Blanc), based in Chamonix, France, had been a beacon of scientific research and advocacy for alpine ecosystems, blending passion and rigorous science. In July 2024, CREA Mont-Blanc faced a critical challenge: how to sustain and expand its mission in an era of growing ecological threats and limited resources. Funding was a constant concern, with the majority coming from grants and donations. While CREA Mont-Blanc prided itself on its autonomy and independence, it needed to explore new avenues to secure its future. The rise of ecotourism presented an opportunity—but also a dilemma. Could alpine tourists, who posed a risk to the very ecosystems CREA Mont-Blanc sought to protect, also become part of the solution? How could CREA Mont-Blanc engage with tourism without compromising its core focus on research and environmental protection?
