In January 2025, Dr. Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, the superior leader of Kinnar Akh??? (KA), a Hindu organization of transgender people, announced the ordination of a cisgender woman as a religious leader. Mamta Kulkarni was a popular national face, but she had a dubious past and no record of public leadership or advocacy. Her appointment as a spiritual leader in the KA generated a nationwide media uproar, questioning the appointment and Tripathi’s leadership. The public attention raised the KA’s profile in the public, but was this the attention that Tripathi wanted for herself or the KA? Should she respond to the controversy, which was undermining her 23-year history of dedicated activism and the KA’s advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community, or should she ignore the backlash and wait it out?
