Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. (SEC), a once-dominant high-tech giant renowned for its stronghold in commodity memory chips, found itself grappling with a profound crisis. As of November 2024, strategic challenges confronted SEC’s semiconductor business, overseen by the Device Solutions (DS) division. Despite reporting its highest quarterly revenues in two years, SEC struggled to maintain competitiveness in critical business areas such as high bandwidth memory (HBM) technology and logic foundry. SEC’s historical dominance in dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) and NAND memory markets was undermined by its delayed entry into the fast-growing HBM market, crucial for artificial intelligence (AI) applications. Domestic rival SK Hynix Inc. gained a competitive edge by securing major deals with Nvidia Corporation and leading the HBM market, with significantly better production yields. Further, Samsung Foundry, SEC’s foundry division, experienced a decline in market share, driven in part by its loss of major clients such as Qualcomm Incorporated to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). Ongoing operating losses and strategic uncertainties raised questions about whether SEC should scale back, spin off, or exit the foundry business altogether.
