Early in 2023, a pitch deck was presented to First Australians Capital Ltd (FAC)—a Sydney-based Indigenous-led investment company operating throughout Australia. Native Foodways Pty Ltd (Native Foodways), an Indigenous-owned start-up bakery, was seeking an AUD$2 million investment to launch a bakery cafe in a vacant food court outlet in Sydney’s Central Business District. Despite Native Foodways’s ambitious plans to catalyze Australia’s native grains industry, FAC’s investments team could not write a $2 million cheque to such an early-stage venture.
Therefore, in February 2023, FAC’s associate director of investments and associate director of impact set out to determine (1) the minimum amount of capital needed to launch the bakery cafe, (2) how to increase customer demand for native grains, (3) how to scale the supply chain, (4) how to complete the venture on time, (5) how to build brand recognition, and (6) whether the investment would align with FAC's 10-year strategy.
