Rajeev Kher, the founder of Saraplast Pvt. Ltd. (Saraplast), started manufacturing portable toilets to augment the sanitation facilities available at major events such as the Kumbh Mela and the Pandharpur Yatra. He was motivated by his desire to bring the cleanliness and hygiene that he had seen in foreign countries to India. One of the chief problems Kher faced was the stigma attached to the sanitation industry in the social milieu of India. Through consistent effort, he was able to build Saraplast to a revenue of almost US$5 million. Given the huge demand for portable sanitation in India, Kher was keen to double his revenue. But he faced a difficult task in finding people who were willing to work for his company. He also had to choose between pursuing growth in the commercial construction industry and the event sanitation industry.
