In January 2022, Ken Shea, president and chief executive officer, and Sally van de Wiel, senior vice president of member experience and strategy, met to discuss East Coast Credit Union’s potential pursuit of B Corporation (B Corp) certification. Shea and Van de Wiel were responsible for leading a discussion at the board of directors’ annual strategic planning session scheduled for May 2022 and were expected to present a recommendation about whether East Coast Credit Union should pursue B Corp certification. This certification could have served as compelling evidence of East Coast Credit Union’s positive impact on its members, employees, and community. But the process to obtain and maintain certification demanded substantial investments of time, financial resources, and organizational effort. These resources were already stretched within the credit union due to its focus on other strategic priorities (e.g., amalgamation, organic growth, investment in technology). This left Shea and Van de Wiel to ask themselves, “Do we really need another certification?”
