In early 2024, a doctoral student approached Akshay Tyagi, head of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) at The LaLiT Hotels, to examine the company’s pioneering efforts in transgender inclusion. The LaLiT had gained recognition for organizing transgender-inclusive job fairs, providing scholarships, and offering gender affirmation surgeries. Despite these initiatives, transgender employees continued to face workplace challenges. Through interviews across several hotel locations, the student uncovered persistent issues such as customer bias, colleague microaggressions, misgendering, and social discomfort. Tyagi, while proud of the progress made at the organization, was troubled by these findings and questioned whether existing DEI measures were sufficient.
