In February 2025, a data scientist at Unity Health Toronto (UHT) faced a pressing challenge central to the hospital’s operational efficiency and financial stability. Tasked by the vice president of data science and advanced analytics, and the interprofessional resource team, the data scientist was charged with proposing an optimal size and skill mix for the nursing team at UHT’s St. Michael’s Hospital for the upcoming fiscal year (April 2025–March 2026). This effort aimed to address the rising costs of agency nurses while maintaining high-quality patient care amid a post-pandemic staffing crisis.
