Byju’s was founded in 2011 under the company name Think and Learn Pvt. Ltd. in the Indian city of Bengaluru. The 2015 launch of the Byju’s Learning App helped transform kindergarten to grade 12 education in India. With capital funding from major investors, the company achieved unicorn status by 2017, reaching a valuation of US$1 billion. Between 2018 and 2021, the company scaled up rapidly through high-profile acquisitions. At its peak, Byju’s employed more than 50,000 people worldwide, including educators, developers, and support staff. But the company’s fortunes soon took a dramatic turn. By late 2024, Byju’s was facing mounting financial losses, delayed financial disclosures, and regulatory scrutiny. The company’s valuation collapsed from a high of US$22 billion and its operations were in a crisis. The most pressing concerns included settling outstanding salary dues, restoring corporate governance, and correcting the internal and external mismatch. The company’s ability to rebuild its reputation, restore trust, and regain financial stability was at stake.
