In 2018, Sedjro Gontran Owusu, a small-scale gold miner in Ghana and the owner of Gontran Mining Group (GMG), filed a lawsuit against Asifrica Gold Holdings (Asifrica), Owusu’s former Chinese partner with whom he signed a contract to help him run his business. According to the agreement, Asifrica was to provide GMG with mining support services, and GMG was to provide the gold concession legally registered to a small-scale miner and facilitate the business operations. However, Asifrica breached the terms of its agreement with GMG and also engaged in illegal and unethical mining practices, for which it was sanctioned. However, bribery, corruption, and political connections appeared to protect Asifrica.

At the end of 2023, as the case was making its slow progress through the courts, Owusu considered his options and wondered how he might best resolve the ongoing conflict. Should he run for political office in his constituency and use his political influence to sort out his conflict with Asifrica or should he trust that his lawsuit will be heard without bias, settle his claims, and return his concession?
