By December 2025, Olivia Campbell had achieved her dream of starting a successful business: a thriving Suzuki music school, Acorn Music Academy, in Raleigh, North Carolina. As her business had grown, Campbell realized that using the accrual method of accounting would give her a more holistic picture of her business. For example, cash payments for lessons were typically made in advance or well after the service was delivered, and employees were paid once a month, a few weeks after they performed the labour. Campbell had also purchased expensive equipment on account and booked space for lessons in advance, paying for the rental space well ahead of its use for lessons. Campbell’s long-term plan was to hire more workers and own her own studio space for lessons. With this strategic plan in mind, Campbell was reviewing the business transactions for the past month and making the necessary adjustments in her accounting records.
