In October 2022, Cameco Corporation (Cameco) announced the acquisition of US-based Westinghouse Electric Company LLC (Westinghouse) in partnership with Brookfield Renewable Corporation (Brookfield Renewable), which was expected to close in 2023. Westinghouse, the world’s largest nuclear services provider, went bankrupt in 2017 after significant delays and cost overruns on two nuclear reactor projects. When it emerged from bankruptcy in 2018, Westinghouse was purchased by Brookfield Business Partners LP (Brookfield Business Partners), the private equity unit of Brookfield Asset Management Ltd. By 2022, Brookfield Business Partners had returned Westinghouse to financial health and decided to exit its investment. Cameco was already the world’s second-largest uranium producer but viewed this acquisition as an opportunity to expand into other segments of the nuclear industry. Senior management at Cameco had to negotiate a fair value for Westinghouse that was acceptable to all parties and then close the deal.
