In 2023, generative artificial intelligence (AI) applications such as ChatGPT were proving to be transformative in many industries, bringing the potential of AI to common users across many industries. The AI-based education technology (edtech) start-up Flint Inc. (Flint), based in San Francisco, faced competitive pressures as well as heightened customer interest at this time. As the founding team was working to develop its flagship platform, technology leaders and kindergarten to grade 12 (K–12) teachers were already exploring AI-based learning solutions, and Flint began to receive serious inquiries from schools. They faced a unique challenge: heightened interest for a product that was still under development. Flint could respond to these customers, but its product was still under development, and it was still difficult to predict the overall reaction of consumers to generative AI. Flint needed to ensure that it had a reliable product offering suited for learning and that it understood both the reservations of certain stakeholders and the competitiveness of other players in the industry. As generative AI continued to attract interest from all sectors and competitive pressures increased by the day, they had to decide what to do: Should they launch the solution in its current state to capitalize on early interest and gain first-mover advantage? Should they delay the launch, refining the current version further to ensure readiness and reliability? Or should they adopt a phased rollout—offering a partial solution while continue to develop the full product?
