South Africa was inundated with complex social challenges, especially in early childhood development, that were exacerbated by fragmented and inefficient systems. Backbone organizations provided an effective working model to resolve these challenges by facilitating collaboration between the public, private, and non-profit sectors to drive greater collective social impact. In 2017, Warren Farrer, then head of corporate social investment at RCL FOODS Ltd. (RCL), established the Do More Foundation (Do More) to address the systemic gaps in early childhood development through a backbone-organization model. As an independent non-profit organization founded by RCL, Do More coordinated multiple diverse stakeholders in improving the lives of children and families. However, with the foundation’s continued growth, Farrer had to decide how to scale its operations in both South Africa and the United Kingdom without losing Do More’s culture of courage, collaboration, and distributed leadership.
